Sinden – XLR8R Podcast 151

Earlier this year, UK bass icon Sinden launched his own record label, Grizzly. The label’s discography is only a few releases deep—the most recent being WAFA’s “Ewid Disco” 12”—but it’s quickly become clear that Sinden’s A&R acumen is as potent as his talent for crafting high-quality radio broadcasts, not to mention his top-notch DJ and production skills. Speaking of the latter, he’s also got the debut album from The Count & Sinden slated for release in the near future, not to mention plenty more Grizzly releases and his usual spate of DJ gigs around the globe. Amidst all this, Sinden somehow found the time to assemble a mix for the XLR8R podcast series, and, as expected, it weaves together propulsive, low-end-heavy tunes—many of them unreleased and/or exclusive—that touch on different scenes, sounds, and continents.

While a lot of DJs might mention Detroit or Chicago as a key influence of their music, the star of Fabric’s latest mix CD is a little different. Graeme Sinden grew up around Kent and Essex in satellite towns near London. As a kid his stereo was tuned to the drum & bass and two step garage sounds that gave London such a unique input into dance music. Now in the naughties, along with a new twentysomething generation of producers like Herv or Duke Dumont he’s helping to update the vibe of the bass heavy sounds of London from the mid 1990s into an altogether more exciting musical melting pot…
This week’s show by BBC Radio One DJs Nerm & D-Code bring the flipside of drum and bass, taking you on a journey through electro, dubstep and punk! This month they’re joined by The Count & Sinden for a special DJ battle!
UK newspaper The Guardian published a ‘what is fidget house’ guide recently, and name-checked Switch and Jesse Rose as the inventors of dance floor-filling genre of the moment. Somewhat ambivalently, Guardian hack (and NME/Sun contributor) John McDonnell conceded that the duo made up the term as a joke several years ago, and also said the ‘scene doesn’t really exist beyond the internet’, before launching into a scathing assault on the genre.
