Shortly before summer I decided I wanted to do a remake of the old Falcon & Bangalter track ‘So Much Love To Give’. Simply because I’ve always thought it’s one of the most brilliant samples ever. One of those samples you can loop into oblivion and people will still love it after 6 minutes. I did my version, played it out a lot and reactions were pretty big everywhere so I thought maybe we should release it. Imagine the horror when JUST when I was about to release it, Fedde announces his version on Facebook, hahaha! He did a fantastic remake obviously, so hats off to him. It would be completely lame to go release it now of course so I’m not going to do that. I’d love for people to be able to enjoy it though, so why not give it away! So here it is, hope you like it!

FunkyHouseMusic.com proudly presents one of our top picks to blow up at WMC 2010. We couldn’t be more excited as this package has anthem alert written all over it for a multitude of reasons. Both new and old school music fans alike will appreciate the importance of this new dance floor weapon as it re-establishes itself among the elite choons we are bearing witness to during the current disco house revival. But before we begin with the dissection, let’s take a brief history lesson…

Back in 2001 Hatiras’ “Spaced Invader” was exalted as one of the biggest tunes of the new millennium. It received 2 nods as BBC Radio One’s “Essential New Tune” by Pete Tong. It was heavily supported by top jocks including The Chemical Brothers, Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, etc. The remixes came from the heavyweights of the electronic music world: Darren Emerson, Olav Basoski, King Unique, Ian Pooley, CZR and Mr. G. Massive underground remixes by drum and bass legends J Majik, Ed Rush and Optical and High Contrast stirred up a frenzy and spawned a new genre. The tune released through Defected Records (UK), Ministry of Sound (Australia), Universal Music (Canada), News (GAS) and International House Records (US); it was a top ten UK hit, topped the Coolcuts chart and playlists worldwide and earned Hatiras his first of two Canadian Juno Awards (the equivalent of the US Grammys) and a SOCAN award for most radio play.

Now, a decade later, DJs, artists and the press worldwide are raving about the resurgence of filtered disco house. Cut-ups of old disco records and familiar samples are resurfacing with that classic sound. The time couldn’t be better to update one of the anchor tunes of that era with a fresh new package of 2010 remixes. The initial batch of “Spaced Invader” remixes are split into 2 packages that boast reworks by an international cast of producers that are truly some of the hottest, best selling and most relevant names in house today. On remix pack 1: Hatiras (Canada), Olivier Giacomotto (France), Malente (Germany), Olav Basoski (Holland) and Nom De Strip (UK) all smash the tune into this decade, each with a unique approach. Remix pack 2 (coming soon) consists of dancefloor crushing reworks by Tim Healey (UK), Santiago & Bushido (US), Kid Dub vs Eric Volta (France), Robb G (Canada) and more to be announced.

Hatiras 2010 Vocal Mix

Kicking off the package is the original innovator himself – Hatiras – creating a new interpretation and let us tell you – its just as slammin’ as the original. Hatiras is in classic form as he efficiently approaches the track design with the A.D.D. dance floor current state of mind. Keeping intact all the ingredients that made the original so effective, the remix updates the listening experience with added epic attributes to one of the most memorable build ups in electronic dance music history. Our key observation is that Hatiras did a masterful job of ensuring the “special sauce” of the song remained, while implementing new masterfully crafted details to add incremental value to the listening experience.

Malente Remix

The Nu Disco/Indie re-interpretation comes from Germany and the red hot Malente. Adding a variety of new elements, we forecast the new crop of ravers, club heads, hipsters, and everything in between will be twisting bodies in uncontrollable fashion as they discover this gem. An excellent recruitment by Hatrax Records, and a very strong addition to the package.

Nom De Strip Remix

If you aren’t familiar with the name, then you aren’t doing your research as Nom De Strip is 1/2 of the Stupid Fresh project. Awww yeah – now we’ve got your attention. Hatrax Records nails another recruitment as we are delighted to hear a stutter attack of funky sound with the vocal used minimally, but to deviating effect. This is a twisted interpretation aimed straight at the underground. We look forward to hearing more from Nom De Strip as he continues to explore a solo path of production.

Representing for the French comes an unusual yet tasteful tech house interpretation from the very well established Olivier Giacomotto. The remix slowly builds in typical tech house style with breakdowns that tease of explosions, but then drop into minimal hysteria that should drive club floors mad. Hatrax Records was intelligent to include this version in the package to get the expanded exposure into another underground segment. Well executed and not to be slept on…

Overall, Hatrax records has a very hot release ready to fire on the floors of Miami WMC 2010. But I haven’t been doing nothing this summer and fall! Not only did I do fantastic gigs all over the world, met great people, made new friends, I also started a new label. It’s called Surplus. The sound of the new label may be a little different than what you are used to from me, but that’s exactly the idea ..

Ever since the electro-influenced house surfaced a couple of years ago I’ve had a feeling this might finally bring an end to the narrowminded, one-way thinking amongst DJ’s and producers about ‘their’ style of dancemusic. I’ve been doing this since the early nineties and to me it’s all the same; it’s housemusic! Sure, one ‘crowd’ leans more towards what we call trance now, and another favors more techno-based or groovy disco-ish stuff. But in the end we all come from the same place; housemusic.
Minimal? SCHMINIMAL! That’s housemusic too! Over the summer I kept walking around with this in my head and I needed to feed it and get it out of my system.
Somewhat trancy, maybe techhousy and still grooving. The tracks that I came up with didn’t quite fit the Rootz-tag, releasing them on Rootz might scare some of our fanbase away, so we started a new label named Surplus. Releases 1-4, all still under my own name (cause heck, I made them, right?) are ready for release now and will come your way shortly!

Amsterdam’s house legend recently launched a brand new site – and believe us, it is one of the hottest DJ website’s we’ve seen to date.

In addition to the now-standard Flash graphics and music player, what really makes this site stand to us is all the nice little extras.

For instance, each listing in the HUGE discography section features not only the vinyl artwork from the release, but also a little individualized comment from Olav about the release.

Olav Basoski – ‘Waterman’ Music Video

Currently being tipped as this autumn’s crossover dance smash, ‘Waterman’ supporters range from Fatboy Slim to a host of Radio 1 stalwarts, including Judge Jules, Pete Tong, and Rob Da Bank.

Over the 2005 summer, the track has steadily grown from an underground club staple to all-out arena-shaking anthem, as anyone who saw Fatboy Slim open his set with it at Glastonbury can testify. And with a matter of days to go before this year’s Notting Hill Carnival, expect this aural assault to be booming out from soundsystem after soundsystem…

‘Waterman’ is the work of Dutch house master, Olav Basoski, he of club hits such as Sil’s ‘Windows’ and Pancake’s ‘Don’t Turn Your Back’, and a remix resume that includes everyone from Moby to James Brown, and Bob Marley to Armin van Buuren and Todd Terry. His latest floorshaker features Michie One on vocals, tearing it up over Olav’s carnival-style beats. Michie, alongside Louchie Lou, first stormed to prominence in the 1990′s. Produced by both Sly & Robbie and Quincy Jones’s son, QDIII, the duo’s deft mix of dancehall, R&B, hip hop and pop, brought them to worldwide attention and a series of hits.

Joining the vocal and dub mixes are remixes from Friendly, with a barnstorming breaks rerub, and Azzido Da Bass, with a swerving bass-heavy remix that should see him back on the streets of West London following his mighty ‘Doom’s Night’. Radio 1′s Trophy Twins turn in two storming house mixes: one vocal, one dub – both tough and funky.

Other mixes released on Olav Basoski’s own label – Rootz – see’s the man drop a killer “Toss It Up Dub” style mix that eases up on the original’s vocals, and incorporates a more “Samplitude” style banger for the old school fans with a tougher than nails bassline, and a new vocal hook not present in any of the other mixes.

Special – Olav Basoski

The name – Olav Basoski – is for years on end one standing on the top of the bill. Since the nineties this legend, born in Haarlem (Holland) rules the dance floors al over the world with his mixing skills, remixes, and his own tracks…

He has done remixes all over the planet, and the list of his own productions is at least as long, and consists of a fair deal of classics like:

Pancake – Don’t turn your back, Sil – Windows, Sil – Villa Ducato and let’s not forget, the whole Samplitude series!

Also, he has done lots of collaborations on his behalf. He has shared his studio with the likes of Erick E, DJ Zki, Kadoc, DJ Roog, Armin Van Buuren, and others.

The former purveyor of the infamous Work-label from Amsterdam (together with already mentioned Erick E) is presently one the people behind Rootz records. That, already in the short time of existence, has gained an international reputation for releasing outstanding tracks like “Waterman” and “La Poema” (together with DJ Roog). This is the highest time to interview this busy bee!

At first, the inevitable question, how did house music come intro your life? And do you recall the first reaction you had? And, when did it occur?

I was already mixing for a few years. At that time, it wasn’t called djing, but mixing ‘ haha! A friend of mine had bought some 1200′s and we poached import stores for cool records. That all pointed out towards R&B and disco. The Jam & Lewis era, you can refer to it like that. Shortly after that I started going out. In Haarlem, you had a few clubs with a very high juvenile character, so it was not happening there for me.

There was also one club that plugged some more progressive music – “the stalker”. In contrast of what you are reading all over the Internet, it was not “Inner-city” that I heard for the first time, but Babyford’s “oochy koochy”. I thought ‘ ‘goddamn, what’s this’? Outrageous hard beats, way too much bass, AWESOME! I grew up with (in its own matter, great) disco records, all of them with that cozy and sweet song/melody, and then suddenly this came along. That was quite a scare, haha! I could not get that record out of my head… it happened about in the mid-eighties.

On a given moment, you began with producing yourself, how did that shape itself?

Well, I already had mixed some records for airplay, was a major fan of Ben Liebrand and Peter Slaghuis, and did some things for local radio pirates. Especially Peter Slaghuis did some nice things with samples. When in that time “Bomb da bass” and “Marss” and such appeared, which consisted out of nothing more then clashed samples, I had the urge to try that myself. Martijn ten Velden, yes, MTV, lived around the corner and had a relationship with the girl next door to me, so I saw him quite frequently. He had some things going on with hip-hop, and had a Roland 808 and 909 at home, which I could lend sometimes. It suddenly appears to me that perhaps he has learned how to make beats.

Dj Marcello (Chemistry) came over to my place frequently, and when I played some examples for him, Martijn jumped up and shouted: “no man, this is how it should be done!” At that point he programmed some things on that 909 and Marcello was very satisfied with what he heard.

Alright then, what I did, completely sucked. But it suddenly appeared to me what the direction was that had to be taken. Because I already had a small sampler for making those radio mixes, I experimented with that 808 and 909. Lots of fiddling with midi cables, things that weren’t synchronized with each other… pff, hahaha!

I did the best I could, and traveled far and wide in the search of record labels willing to listen to my tapes. Absolutely nothing happened, until I suddenly was asked by Dureco, where I also ran down the door with my tapes, to listen to an old record of them, “MDMC”, they wanted to re-release it, but could use a more modern sense in it. And out of nowhere, I sat in an enormous (seriously, enormous!) studio, WITH engineer, building a remix. In two days I was taught so much from that engineer, that I knew what was my calling.

How did you meet Erick E?

In the meantime, I had opened a little studio with Alex Romano in Haarlem. In there, I fiddled with beats and loops. DJ Zki, who also lived around the corner, and worked in THE local record store, contacted me with Rhythm Import in Amsterdam. My first demo they rejected big time, but wanted to release the second. Later on I made with Zki – “Sil ‘ Windows’ and ‘World Series of Life – Spread Love’.

Erick-E, at that point was still referred to as E-one, haha, was the buddy of one of the employees of Rhythm Import. It appeared to Peter Duijkersloot, the owner of Rhythm, that the ideas that Erick-E had, could contain some potential, if I worked them out. Although at first, it didn’t seem to work properly. The first raw edit of ‘Pancake’ was made that day. Much later, with an intermission of at least a year, we had another go with ‘Pancake’. And it suddenly fit, that track had become bloody awesome.

In the start of the nineties you made a sound with Dj Zki and Dobre on Fresh Fruit and your own releases on Work that became internationally known as the “Amsterdam Sound”. Everywhere in Holland you could see people with work shirts and record bags. How did you experience that period?

Zki and Dobre had an immense success with Fresh Fruit, that really determined the sound. That, to be honest, was the Haarlem Sound. I can recall that I was recording Pancake for Erick and said to him: “they’re not going to put this on vinyl’. The next day we received a call, Rhythm didn’t want to just to release ‘Pancake’, but also wanted to give us our own label. And so the Work record label was born, the tougher nemesis of Fresh Fruit. It did not appear to me like that, because before we knew, we here making records day in day out in my little studio, and making remixes for labels all over the world, the phone was red-hot.

Besides producing you are also spinning frequently in Holland and abroad, what’s the most bizarre story that you can recall at this moment?

I called Armin van Buuren, if he was into going to Moscow, to do some gigs, and that turned out to be a ridiculous weekend. Armin did not stop babbling about Russian mafia, and flying with Aeroflot. Encountered some idiots in that club, who threw drip mats to my head, because I was not playing records that where hard enough, pfff.

Canada 2001 sucked even more, I came back from Ibiza, had to do a fast gig in Amsterdam, went on to London, and via Amsterdam again through to Canada. I missed the first flight because of a fire on our national airport, so I landed a day too late. Immediately went through to Calgary, in a thunderstorm, so that plane went every direction imaginable. And straight on back to Vancouver. At that point I was already awake for about 30 hours. The next step was a gig in Tokyo, but went ill in Vancouver. I lay there hallucinating for about a day or 10 in a hotel, at my own costs. That was a month to remember…
