For all you burgeoning producers out there, here is your chance…

Future Music Magazine,Mark Knight and Toolroom Records have teamed up with Beatport and Sonic Academy to launch a fresh and exciting ‘co-production’ competition – the first of its kind. The idea of the competition is to give up and coming producers the chance to work with one of the industry’s leading artists, launch their music career with the world’s premier dance label and be financially rewarded for their work, receiving 50% of publishing and an equal share of artist sales royalties. Not a bad deal at all.

The mechanics of the competition are simple…

The island’s clubs have been in the grip of minimal and techno for the past few years, but Mark reckons we’ll see vocals and live instrumentation making a massive comeback.

Mark Knight’s much anticipated Toolroom Knights mix compilation is due for release Monday 1st June. Packed full of exclusives, it’s the perfect soundtrack for this summer.

Just when you think you know an artist, they creep up on you with something a little out of the ordinary and leave you scratching your head. Then you have Toolroom Knights Mixed by Mark Knight 2.0, which is less about stealth and rather a full on frontal attack that will hammer through any previous boundaries you may have created for the Toolroom Records chief. The result isn’t head scratching either, but more likely to be burst ear drums and sore dancing feet, as we’re treated to a genre-busting feast of electronic music that refuses to be pigeonholed and is sourced from the deepest and most obscure corners of Mark’s own personal Toolroom…

CD1 begins with the sweet summery vibes of ‘Break Up’ by Sasse before inspiring your groove hormones with the infectious horns of ‘Parklife’ and the contagious beats of Audiofly’s ’1999′. Then Mark’s first appearance, as remixer on ‘Save Us’, shifts gear and propels the mix to peak time tech house, quickly followed by a series of exclusive tracks recorded especially for this compilation. Adam S provides the twisted military funk, next Mr. Knight returns with the gushing warmth of ‘Mannheim’, a tribute to the city all about the groove, and then ‘Club Politics’, Mark’s ode to the aspects of clubland we could all do without.

By now we’ve blown 2 speakers and the ice cannon has run dry, but the cavalry arrives in a sequence of climaxing minimal tech before the monstrous ‘Phat Planet’, revisited by Mark and Toolroom buddy Funkagenda, keeps us sprinting to the finish line of a frenzied mix representing the full breadth of the dance music spectrum.

Straight into CD2, we enter deep house territory, courtesy of Soul Minority, and the yet to be released bliss of ‘Lisbon Sunrise’ by S Groove. Then, more exclusives from Funkagenda, in the form of relentless atmospheric techer ‘Do Geese See God’ and the more classic Toolroom sounding power of ‘Breakwater’, sharpen the tension and reveal the dark side of Toolroom Knights. There is industrial techno throb – Tiger Stripes style – and pulsating loops from Bedrock boys, Digweed and Muir, as well as yet another unseen track, this time D-Formation’s melodic anthem ‘Signs and Portents 09′. Somewhat fittingly, the finale sees the mighty Faithless with ‘Music Matters’, Toolroom Record’s 100th release in fact, and Mark Knight himself on typical stellar remix duty.

Toolroom Knights Mixed by Mark Knight 2.0 is a challenge to your senses, it’ll make you soar on a seemingly endless rhythm before dropping you into a pool of drowning electronic tech and then teasing to rescue you with an elusive crescendo. More than anything though, it is a challenge to anyone who thinks they know Mark Knight and Toolroom, to well and truly think again.

Their remix has been caned by all the big house and electro house jocks, and the crowd lapped it up last night. As the beat kicked back in after the breakdown an ice cannon went off, which temporarily covered the dancefloor in a haze of cool clouds. Simply awesome!

Toolroom Records head honcho Mark Knight puts the needle to the record for the latest offering from the label’s compilation series. The 4th album in, and already Toolroom Knights has firmly cemented itself into dance buyers lives, offering a taste of what the label and their parties are all about… quality, forward-thinking House. Toolroom Records release their forth compilation ‘Toolroom Knights’ on 26th May, mixed by yourself, Mark Knight. Can you briefly explain a little how the label has moved on over the last year?..

MK: The label and its output has literally doubled over the last year. Obviously we now put out our own compilations alongside our tour brand ‘Toolroom Knights’, while Toolroom Records & Toolroom Trax continue to get huge support the world over. We also have our new digital label ‘Leaders Of the New School’ which has been doing really well for us too.

The compilation reflects the sound of Toolroom’s parties ‘Toolroom Knights’ as well as yourself as a DJ. Tell us how you came up with the tracklisting for your mix?

The tracks were literally chosen from tried and tested tracks straight from my DJ sets, my remixes and productions alongside new and forthcoming bits from the label. Also some more deeper tracks that I love like Dennis Ferrer’s ‘How Do I let Go’ & Deschampes ‘A Million Oaks’. Both CDs are all about creating a musical journey and a natural progression musically throughout both discs.

What are the key tracks on your mix?

My remixes of both Underworld & Lil Mo Yin Yang are key moments on the CD alongside some great unreleased tracks from Nic Fanciulli & Adam K & Addy.

Away from your DJing what productions have you been working on recently?

I’ve been working on a brand new 3 track EP for Toolroom Trax which includes a track with vocals by Dave Diamond. I have also recently finished a new track with Adam K & Soha called ‘From The Speaker’ that’s out at the end of June on Toolroom Records. I’m also working on my ‘Average House Band’ project with Funkagenda.

You’ve been around the world DJing, what’s your favourite venue to play in?

Definitely Ministry Of Sound UK, the sound system in the Box is amazing.

Talking of nights out, what’s your favourite tipple?

Ha’ Got to be Ministry Vodka & Cranberry!

The compilation touches down May 26th, where can people catch you over the coming months?

Im touring right across the globe ‘ Amsterdam, Spain, Russia, France, Portugal, USA, London’ Then, as well as this I’m playing @ Amnesia (Terrace) on Tuesdays as part of Toolroom Knights 1st Ibiza residency. We’ve got 7 dates in total throughout July, Aug, September. I cant wait!
