Exclusive Interview: Fedde Le Grand

Dutch producer Fedde Le Grand is without a doubt the house scene’s biggest breakthrough artist of 2006. At the beginning of the year, he was virtually unknown outside of the Dutch house scene.

A year later, he’s had a #1 hit in the UK, several promiment releases on noteworthy labels including Toolroom and Defected, and even his own contribution to the prestigious “Sessions” compilation series from Ministry of Sound. And all of this thanks to a catchy little tune by the name of “Put Your Hands Up For Detroit”.

We recently got the chance to ask Fedde questions about his lightning-fast rise to the top, the challenges of living up to your own hype, and found out that he likes cuddling with lions.

FHM: You had a meteroic rise to the top in 2006 after your hit “Put Your Hands Up For Detroit” took the clubland by storm. Was this success a surprise to you or did you know you had something special in store?

FLG: When I was done in the studio I thought ‘ok, this is good’, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that others will like it as well. When I started playing it the reactions were very positive. After a while we – Funkerman and I – decided to release it on our label Flamingo Recordings. From that moment on it just took off. At that moment I didn’t know it would turn out to be this big. I started to realise the impact of it when my tune won the award of ‘#1 summer anthem of Ibiza 2006′. Soon after that the track entered the #1 in the UK and this is something that doesn’t happen quite often, especially being a Dutch DJ and it being a house track. So I am the first Dutch DJ ever who has managed to get a #1 hit in the UK with my own tune. That’s quite an achievement.

FHM: Tell us a little bit about Fedde before the fame. We know you weren’t just an overnight success story so give our readers a little insight on where you came from, and how you got involved in the dance community.

FLG: I had to substitute for a colleague at a festival somewhere and the producer of
‘TMF the DJs’ ‘ a Dutch television programme ‘ happened to be there. When I was done, he came up to me and asked me if I wanted to perform in their television programme which was recorded at the Danssalon in Eindhoven at that time. After this gig, I received a phone call from the owner of the Danssalon and he asked me if I wanted to work for him. The Danssalon was one of the finest clubs at that time. So this is the way I got involved in the dance scene. I have been producing since 2001 and since approximately 3 years I have started my own label called Flamingo Recordings together with Funkerman. The club night called ‘Sneakerz’ has gained me quite some credibility within the Dutch house scene and I am also one of the innovators of Sneakerz.

FHM: Do you find it harder now to produce music in order to live up to the expectations that come with having a smash hit? Or is this something you don’t even pay attention to and just continue to do?

FLG: I always try to create something that moves me. It doesn’t matter what kind of music it is, it could be energetic, beautiful, happy, deep, but it must make an impact on me in some sort of way. Therefore I won’t repeat myself by doing the same thing endlessly over and over again because I believe it kills the creativity and I would become incredibly unhappy. Therefore I intend to create music which makes me excited and enthusiastic. I can only hope that other people will become excited and enthusiastic as well.

FHM: Was producing a track for Defected any different from working for other labels? Do you find the label’s size play an influence on the type of sound they wanted you to churn out a.k.a. constraining you to conform to their preference? Or did they accept your creativity without a doubt?

FLG: I don’t have to create a type of sound they want to churn out or that I’m constricted to conform to the things they want. Like I said in my previous question, I refuse to repeat myself because I believe it kills the creativity and it would make me incredibly unhappy.

FHM: What, in your opinion, is the best thing about “making it”?

FLG: I can do what I’ve always wanted to do, which is making music. And now I’ve got the possibility to do it for a wider audience.

FHM: We hear that you’re an expert with the Logic Pro software. How long have you been producing for?

FLG: I’ve been producing since 2001.

FHM: What is your most memorable moment so far in travels as a DJ?

FLG: I have many memorable moments but when I was in South Africa I had the opportunity to cuddle a lion. I thought that was really impressive.

FHM: We’ve heard that the hip hop group D12 has created a rap version of “Put Your Hands Up For Detroit”. Can you tell us a little more about this?

FLG: Someone from the American record company knew Eminem and he forwarded the track. When rapper Bizarre heard it, he was immediately hooked. He said: ‘What the Fuck! This is addictive like Bootsy Collins and crack.’ We, Funkerman and I, didn’t have to peddle. Everything went smoothly.

FHM: It’s safe to say that 2006 was a pretty big year for you. What are your plans for ’07?

FLG: First I’ll be touring Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and Miami. Then I’ll be back in Holland and I have a couple of bookings in Europe. Somewhere in May I’ll be doing an American tour and then the summer starts. I have to check my schedule for detailed information, but I know I’m going to be in Ibiza, London, Monaco, Amsterdam, Liverpool, Rotterdam, just to name a few places.

FHM: Now that you’ve become an internationally respected producer, are there any exciting collaborations on the horizon?

FLG: I’ve just released ‘Take No Shhh’ on Defected. ‘Ah Yeah’ is one of the tracks on the flipside, but it is not out yet. I’ve just finished Robbie Williams’ remix and I’m done with Mr V’s remix ‘The Bump’. I have also finished Camille Jones’ remix ‘The Creeps’ and this one is released on DATA/MoS. And of course the Sessions album released on MoS. My collaboration with my label-Flamingo-partner DJ Funkerman is ready as well. The track is called ‘Wheels in Motion’ and it’s on the Dutch major Spinnin’ Records. I’m currently working on a new single with the talented Ida Corr who’s also a Danish singer just like Camille Jones. I’m also working on a remix for Pete Tong and I have started to work on the first productions for my album. Loads to do and there’s more to come!

FHM: What producers right now are inspiring you outside of the electro house sub-genre?

FLG: I am a huge funk and soul lover, so I’m inspired by James Brown, George Clinton and the whole P-funk family. I’m still a huge Jamiroquai fan. I’m also inspired by Green Velvet. He has been around for such a long time and he has always managed to surprise me with his original productions. Furthermore I get inspired by the sets I play all over the world. When I have the feeling that I’m missing something in my set, I’ll try to create a track with that missing bit in the studio. I’m never inspired by one single genre; it’s always a mixture of various music genres.

getting ready for launch later on this month.

Probably the fastest rising star to
hit House music since the Swedish Mafioso, Fedde went from a little known house dj
