Mason

For their latest tour, Dutch duo Mason have taken things to a new level with integrated technology that allows them to control visuals and lighting from the stage. To accomplish this technological feat, Mason worked with media artist and software developer Mattijs Kneppers, who used Max for Live to interface between Mason’s music and the show’s visuals and lighting.

Defected Records Producer Competition 2010

For all you aspiring house music producers out there… here’s your chance to get some proper recognition and some new kit in the process.

Defected Records announces the launch of their Producer Competition 2010, in partnership with Traxsource, Ableton and Loopmasters. Following the success of last year’s Producer Competition, we’re pleased to announce the 2010 contest.

The rules of the competition remain the same: Upload your tracks to the site, where they’ll be rated and commented on. In the second phase of the competition, the Defected A&R team will pick their ten favorite tracks, which will then be voted on by the public.

Last year’s competition proved that there is a wealth of undiscovered talent out there. This is your chance to see your tracks released on one of the most respected labels in the history of house music.

Ms. Pinky + Max for Live = Scratch Anything in Ableton

Ms. Pinky has been on the scene for quite a while pushing out various software tools to let you manipulate audio with timecode records. With Max For Live on the scene you can now scratch in Ableton via Ms. Pinky giving some users an alternate to Ableton’s The Bridge. Create Digital Music posted the down-low on this development:

What should DJing in Ableton Live look like? How could conventional vinyl cueing and scratching be integrated with the Live environment? Serato and Ableton gave us one possible answer to that question last week with The Bridge. Their solution: use your Serato DJ set normally, and simply sync the transport of Ableton Live when the two run simultaneously.

That solution could be ideal for some users, but it falls short of what many expected, which was the ability to scratch audio elements from Live as though they were on vinyl. Scratching Live clips would seem to be the best of both worlds: you get all the live sequencing features of Live, but you can still manipulate sound as you would on a turntable.

Akai APC20 Ableton Controller

Don’t have enough loot for a full Akai APC40? Well now you can still take your Ableton Live sets to the next level with the Akai APC20 Ableton Controller. Create Digital Music has the full lowdown as part of their 2010 NAMM coverage:

Ableton Live-specific controllers just got another addition. You probably could have guessed this would come out, following the APC40 and Novation’s grid-only Launchpad last year, but the Akai APC20 is the new, smaller sibling to Akai’s APC40. The APC20 does basically everything the APC40 does on the latter’s left-hand side — it’s a grid of buttons, a set of mixers for your tracks, buttons for activating tracks (and solo/cue/record), and shortcuts for moving around and triggering the transport. Using the buttons, you can trigger clips or notes, with additional buttons for scenes and stopping clips around the outside of the 8×5 array…

Ableton + Serato: The Bridge

Ableton + Serato: The BridgeLive maker Ableton and DJ and virtual vinyl developer Serato today announced the results of their partnership. First off, this isn’t what many of us originally speculated: it’s not a DJ deck inside Live. Instead, the collaboration seeks to bridge (ahem) the gap between the way DJs perform and the way Live users perform. The result focuses on the way a performance set is assembled in the two paradigms, an attempt to guide the flow of music between the two programs.

Ableton Live-Friendly Remix: “Dum”

Ableton Live-Friendly Remix: It’s amazing that, even today, relatively few artists release stems when they want to encourage remixes. A new remix contest with The Martin Brothers’ new track ‘Dum,’ on the Dirtybird label, goes further, by providing not only individual stems, but a full-blown Ableton Live set, completely with warping parameters and even some plug-in inserts. That should mean just about anyone can pick up the track and start remixing!
