Coachella is a classy affair, my favorite music festival in America. I’ve played there a few times over the years: in 1999 with Q-Bert and Mixmaster Mike. In 2006 with Kanye. In 2008 with Kid Sister. But this year felt extra special. First of all because I was playing twice: solo and with Duck Sauce. And second, because Chromeo was also on the bill so it was a family affair. It felt like the culmination of years of going there with various collaborators and eating the spicy pizza in the VIP tent.

This week we talked to a bunch of people about how vinyl has managed to survive, despite the fact that, technologically speaking, the format is something of an antique. One key group that helped vinyl stay alive once the public began to abandon it in favor of the CD was DJs who would spin vinyl in clubs and on the radio. But in the last decade, while younger audiences — especially indie rock fans — have started buying new music on vinyl, those DJs have largely traded in their crates of records for digital files they play through vinyl emulation software like Scratch Live, made by the New Zealand-based company Serato.

An interesting piece of journalism on the survival of vinyl, trend shifts, present day impacts, A-Trak, all overlayed with a healthy dose of NPR.

In recent years some headlines have cast an increase in sales for vinyl LPs — once considered a casualty of the CD era — as something like a beacon of hope for the struggling music industry. The reality isn’t all that rosy. Though vinyl sales grew by 14% in 2010, according to Nielsen SoundScan, they still counted for less than one percent of the year’s total album sales.

But vinyl has never really gone away. It’s just meant different things to different generations.

Robyn uploaded his latest remix on her SoundCloud yesterday and sparked nearly 20,000 plays already. I’d definitely say this remix is one of my favorites by him and even on par with his Yeah Yeah Yeahs remix. It’s the perfect summer tune for the beginning of winter.

Ducksauce – NPR Interview

In every major dance club across Europe, DJs are spinning the new track from the producing duo Duck Sauce. It’s near the top of the charts across the continent — at No. 1 in Belgium. The radio version has just one simple lyric that doubles as the song’s title, and it’s spoken, not sung: “Barbra Streisand.”

The video for “Barbra Streisand” became a huge viral hit, and it features cameo appearances from Kanye West, Ezra Koenig, ?uestlove, Pharrell, DJ Premier and others.

Canadian DJ Alain Macklovitch, also known as A-Trak, is one half of Duck Sauce. He says the song has nothing to do with the singer. “There really is no relation nor rational reason behind the lyric and the title ‘Barbra Streisand,’” he tells Weekend All Things Considered host Guy Raz. “We just thought it would make people laugh.”

He then goes on to explain the appeal on an independent label, and how a majors difficulty in developing artists adds to it.

When A-Trak (Alain Macklovitch) and Armand Van Helden teamed up as Duck Sauce for last year’s dance hit, “aNYway”, we were surprised, then pleased, then completely addicted. The production duo shares roots in old-school hip-hop and club-friendly, sample-based dance production, but come from entirely different worlds. To give an idea: In 1997, a fifteen-year-old A-Trak was busy winning the world DMC Championship. He would spend that year, and the rest of his teens, known as one of the youngest, most talented scratch performers to ever exist. 1997 was also the year that Armand released his Greatest Hits compilation (on infamous house label, Strictly Rhythms) and Sampleslaya–a party breakbeat album. His next single, “U Don’t Know Me”, dropped later in the year and went to the #2 spot on Billboard pop charts.

Since then, A-Trak has gone from scratch champion to Kanye’s DJ to Fool’s Gold label-founder and production guru. Armand has continued to put out hit records– most recently, 2006′s “My My My” peaked at #2 on Billboard’s dance charts, and 2007′s “I Want Your Soul” did the same. With the wave of disco revival that has been sweeping through dance music in the last few years, it was only a matter of time until these two met. The result of that meeting? The birth of Duck Sauce, creators of delightfully nonsensical and catchy club bangers. The pair’s second single–debuting a year after their first go– had quite a buzz before it even came out. This probably had something to do with the title–”Barbra Streisand”–but it also had a lot to do with the fact that the song turned out to be insanely catchy. The star-studded video–featuring Kanye, Pharrell, Questlove, and Ezra Koenig–didn’t hurt either. We caught up with the A-Trak and Armand yesterday (the day of the single’s official release) in Union Square to chat about the project.

I have a lot of history with the company, since my first record label Audio Research was distributed through them. So it was an honor to be invited to perform on the last day of a week of in-stores, last Saturday, alongside many greats like DJ Premier, Just Blaze and DJ Scratch. I did a full set of routines, I think it was about 17 minutes long! That’s like 3 DMCs, yo. Peter Rosenberg captured some highlights, peep the video… and Fat Beats, I tip my fedora to thee.

Drum roll please as we give you not one, but two of the most in demand and talented DJ’s and Producers of our generation. 3 Beat are proud to announce our latest signing the duo of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden, collectively known as Duck Sauce.

A-trak started out as a hip-hop DJ winning the DMC World DJ Championship an incredible 5 times (the first aged 15). Since then he has managed to merge rap and electronic music via his label Fool’s Gold and has worked closely with Kanye West, Kid Cudi, DJ Am & Boys Noize.

Chromeo – Don’t Turn The Lights On

I have an older brother, his name is David and he has a band called Chromeo. You know this, right? I just need to make sure once in a while.

(Are you following them on twitter yet? They’re new in town.)

Chromeo have a new album just around the corner, and having witnessed the brick-by-brick assembly of that beast, I can’t wait for the world to hear it. Dave always sings me his songs before he records them. Somewhere on one of my old MiniDV tapes I have footage of him doing “Momma’s Boy” on the air-Wurli and air-bells when it was just in his head… I need to dig that up. But I digress. They recorded the new album at a studio just a few blocks from my apartment, so I’d go visit them every evening and was the go-to “how does this sound?” guy. I even tracked their vocals on one of the songs. But truthfully, the way they work is extremely self-contained. If they do reach out to someone on the outside, it’ll be some random saxophonist, which has happened a few times already.

Now it’s all done, and it is my pleasure to present to you: “Don’t Turn The Lights On”.

Thirty years down the line, it’s easy to forget that hip-hop began with DJs stringing the funkiest disco breaks head to tail. But more recently, as evidenced by the creative direction taken by artists like Timbaland and Kanye West, hip-hop seems to be reconnecting with its disco roots.

The prime example of the moment is Duck Sauce, the collaboration between hip-hop mainstay DJ A-Trak and electro-house DJ/producer Armand Van Helden on A-Trak’s Fool’s Gold label.

FHMDC is a very big fan of the A-Trak brand, and the diverse creativity he associates himself with. Whether it is his efforts with Armand Van Helden and the Ducksauce project, blowing up blogs in the NuDisco/Indie space with his essential productions, or jamming with Chilly Gonzales impromptu style — although not directly house music related (and more like DJ Shadow-esque), we believe all innovative music entertainment should be shared and appreciated.

“Often times it’s the casual shows, the “oh I’m just doing this on the side for fun” shows that end up being my favorite ones. Maybe it’s because I love to improvise. Or maybe it’s because these are shows I do with my friends, which is fertile ground for creativity. Last year it was my set at the Do Over. This year so far, my favorite performance was this little guest spot I did at Chilly Gonzales’s “Piano Talk Show” at Joe’s Pub in New York last Thursday. It was barely rehearsed, only 15 minutes in length, and we were both coming in from long flights with little to no sleep.”
