DJ Shortee – DJ TechTools Interview

Dj Shortee

Everyone has an opinion on what it takes to make it as a professional DJ. To some, the genre you play will dictate whether you have a future or not. To others, you are defined simply by the tools that you use. You may even stumble across the occasional lunatic who’s convinced it’s just hard work and giving people a good time that matters. I caught up with DJ Shortee to help answer some of these questions and get her perspective on everything from laptops to running record labels.

Let me introduce you to Shortee; DJ, Producer and Teacher. As one half of LA based Faust and Shortee, Shortee is also the co-founder of 5 Star Records, Heavy Artillery Recordings and production duo, Urban Assault. On the road the “Queen of the Scratch World” has toured alongside KRS One, Supernatural, Method Man, Craze, Q-bert, Z-Trip and The Roots and is the only female ever to produce a solo turntablist album and the first to produce a battle record. Shortee also appears with partner, Faust in Doug Pray’s documentary ‘Scratch’”. Having spent four years as a head professor at The Scratch DJ Academy co-founded by RUN DMC’s Jam Master Jay, Shortee now teaches DJ/Remix courses for the Grammy Foundation. From the crowd’s perspective, Shortee’s Dubstep, Drumstep, D & B and Electro House sets are renowned for destroying dance floors like a super-sized bag of belligerent anvils crashing through the ceiling at a sub-bass convention.

The following interview was conducted over a couple weeks as Shortee bounced around with gigs on both coasts, a video shoot for Whiskey Pete’s ‘Cut Throat’ and multiple label releases. The first lady of scratch appears to make all of this happen on approximately 27 minutes of sleep a night.

ATFC – Dazzle EP

ATFC Dazzle EP Defected

ATFC is many things; producer, DJ, family man and all-round nice chap. But perhaps even more impressive than his juggling of multiple personalities is his encyclopaedic knowledge of music. If he’s not educating his kids with underground disco cuts on the school run, he’ll be digging out even more obscure records with which to craft his on-point productions. Now, after a relatively quiet period of releases on Defected, he’s back with Dazzle EP – a record that’s officially so bright that there are only a handful of people who are allowed to be in the same room as it.

A-Trak – Explains How Serato Works

serato

This week we talked to a bunch of people about how vinyl has managed to survive, despite the fact that, technologically speaking, the format is something of an antique. One key group that helped vinyl stay alive once the public began to abandon it in favor of the CD was DJs who would spin vinyl in clubs and on the radio. But in the last decade, while younger audiences — especially indie rock fans — have started buying new music on vinyl, those DJs have largely traded in their crates of records for digital files they play through vinyl emulation software like Scratch Live, made by the New Zealand-based company Serato.

Olav Basoski – New Day

olav basoski

Olav Basoski was last seen flying the musical flag for Defected more than a decade ago, where the scene – both musically and in business terms – was a very different place. However, after a few years of, in his own words ‘not really convincing himself’ with his musical output, Olav is well and truly back in the form that made him one of the most celebrated house producers of the last decade.

Lone – RBMC Fireside Chat

Lone

Matt Cutler alias Lone surfaced from his bedroom into wider recognition in 2008 with the release of his dream-hop debut opus ‘Lemurian’ on Nottingham’s Dealmaker. Referencing early 90s hardcore raves, Madlib inspired hip hop and tropical beaches far from the British Midlands, Lone’s musical style characteristically envisages places you could never imagine, taking the listener beyond his immediate reality. He contributed remixes for Warp’s Bibio and was picked up by Actress’ label Werk Discs for the sun-drenched ‘Ecstasy And Friends’ album. In 2010 Lone perfected a heavier rave sound with tracks such as ‘Once In A While’ and ‘Pineapple Crush’, releasing more music on Werk Discs as well as his own label, Magic Wire Recordings. While citing hardcore vibes, Lone always stays true to bleep melodies and pop harmonies. Raving without a doubt.
