Who The Hell Are The Young Punx?
The Young Punx are a pair of underground UK dance producers who, over the past couple of years, have become a regular fixture on late night radio and dance floors worldwide. They’ve made their name with a series of cheeky and eclectic club tracks taking elements of popular culture and mashing them with pumping house, nuskool breaks, drum and bass, heavy rock, 80s pop and whatever else takes their fancy.
Their humorous and anarchic remixing approach and innovative DJ sets saw them rise in under a year to remixing for the likes of the Ministry of Sound, Sony and EMI and DJing at Radiohead after-show parties, with guest mixes for Annie Nightingale, Judge Jules, XFM, Kiss FM and Ministry of Sound radio. They were voted by BBC Radio One listeners as one of the two best bootleg remixers of 2003. During early 2005, the Young Punx’s mixes of Phunk Nouveaux – “Whatever”, Groove Cutters Vs Go West – We Close Our Eyes”, Plastic Dreams – “Fuse (Move Your Body”) and Mohito – “Slip Away” have been in the top 20 of the club charts and getting strong BBC Radio One support from the likes of Pete Tong and Judge Jules. Upcoming mixes of De’lacy “Hideaway”, Hound Dogs “I Like Girls” and Braund Reynolds “Rocket” are expected to have an even bigger impact.
They also sell an inexplicably large amount of records in Japan, where they will shortly be releasing a new single on Avex, the world’s largest independent label.
Somewhat to their alarm, their tongue-in-cheek French house bootleg of the 118118 TV adverts (and Rocky theme), “Got Your Number” propelled them into the mainstream in late 2003 with William Hill bookies placing them 25/1 for UK Christmas number one at one point.
The Young Punx are also involved in the vocal house project “Mohito”, the party breaks group “Medcab” and run the break beat record label “Heavy Disco”. Hal from the Young Punx also produces and/or performs behind the scenes on many other dance projects, such as performing and/or producing on Eric Prydz’s number one hit “Call on me” and “Shine” by the Lovefreekz.
