Future Music Magazine,Mark Knight and Toolroom Records have teamed up with Beatport and Sonic Academy to launch a fresh and exciting ‘co-production’ competition – the first of its kind. The idea of the competition is to give up and coming producers the chance to work with one of the industry’s leading artists, launch their music career with the world’s premier dance label and be financially rewarded for their work, receiving 50% of publishing and an equal share of artist sales royalties. Not a bad deal at all.

The mechanics of the competition are simple…

BBC Four Documentary – Synth Britannia

BBC Four has completed a great documentary that charts the rise of synth pop in Britain during the late ’70s and early ’80s — a must see for any electronic music fan. Check out the videos after the break…

Documentary following a generation of post-punk musicians who took the synthesiser from the experimental fringes to the centre of the pop stage.

In the late 1970s, small pockets of electronic artists including the Human League, Daniel Miller and Cabaret Volatire were inspired by Kraftwerk and JG Ballard and dreamt of the sound of the future against the backdrop of bleak, high-rise Britain.

The crossover moment came in 1979 when Gary Numan’s appearance on Top of the Pops with Tubeway Army’s Are Friends Electric heralded the arrival of synthpop. Four lads from Basildon known as Depeche Mode would come to own the new sound whilst post-punk bands like Ultravox, Soft Cell, OMD and Yazoo took the synth out of the pages of the NME and onto the front page of Smash Hits.

By 1983, acts like Pet Shop Boys and New Order were showing that the future of electronic music would lie in dance music.

Contributors include Philip Oakey, Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, Bernard Sumner, Gary Numan and Neil Tennant.

Rane Sixty-Eight: A Mixer/Controller for Two Laptops

For all you Serato DJs who’ve ever had a nightmare trying to patch in your laptop at a gig when the DJ before you was also using a Serato setup… well Rane has the solution for you! Create Digital Music has the lowdown on the new Rane Sixety-Eight dual-computer DJ mixer:

It had to happen sooner or later: the computer has supplanted the turntable, so why not a mixer intended for two computers?

That’s the idea behind the just-announced Rane SIXTY-EIGHT. It’s intended for use with two computers via two independent USB ports, plus controller support (intended primarily for Serato’s tools, but presumably adaptable to other software) for up to four virtual decks.

Now, as a way to manage four decks, it seems like absurd overkill – hasn’t Traktor done four decks for years? But if this solution is indeed software-agnostic, it could be a boon to advanced computer musicians wanting to use computers, or DJs wanting to mix Ableton Live on one machine and a DJ app on another. Of course, you could simply do that with normal audio outputs, or even digital outputs that aren’t USB – in fact, many of the Apple machines (among others) come with digital outs.

Defected Records announces the launch of their Producer Competition 2010, in partnership with Traxsource, Ableton and Loopmasters. Following the success of last year’s Producer Competition, we’re pleased to announce the 2010 contest.

The rules of the competition remain the same: Upload your tracks to the site, where they’ll be rated and commented on. In the second phase of the competition, the Defected A&R team will pick their ten favorite tracks, which will then be voted on by the public.

Last year’s competition proved that there is a wealth of undiscovered talent out there. This is your chance to see your tracks released on one of the most respected labels in the history of house music.

Ms. Pinky + Max for Live = Scratch Anything in Ableton

Ms. Pinky has been on the scene for quite a while pushing out various software tools to let you manipulate audio with timecode records. With Max For Live on the scene you can now scratch in Ableton via Ms. Pinky giving some users an alternate to Ableton’s The Bridge. Create Digital Music posted the down-low on this development:

What should DJing in Ableton Live look like? How could conventional vinyl cueing and scratching be integrated with the Live environment? Serato and Ableton gave us one possible answer to that question last week with The Bridge. Their solution: use your Serato DJ set normally, and simply sync the transport of Ableton Live when the two run simultaneously.

That solution could be ideal for some users, but it falls short of what many expected, which was the ability to scratch audio elements from Live as though they were on vinyl. Scratching Live clips would seem to be the best of both worlds: you get all the live sequencing features of Live, but you can still manipulate sound as you would on a turntable.

Ableton Live-specific controllers just got another addition. You probably could have guessed this would come out, following the APC40 and Novation’s grid-only Launchpad last year, but the Akai APC20 is the new, smaller sibling to Akai’s APC40. The APC20 does basically everything the APC40 does on the latter’s left-hand side — it’s a grid of buttons, a set of mixers for your tracks, buttons for activating tracks (and solo/cue/record), and shortcuts for moving around and triggering the transport. Using the buttons, you can trigger clips or notes, with additional buttons for scenes and stopping clips around the outside of the 8×5 array…

We caught up with one of Toronto’s biggest DJ/producers, JELO, to get his thoughts on this year’s Winter Music Conference.

FunkyHouseMusic.com: Your personal favorite tune of the 2008 WMC?

JELO: Can i have two? I’m a DJ and to choose only one song seems like an impossible task. Even doing a monthly top 10 is tough – I always feels like I’m leaving something out.

(1) Hatiras & JELO – ‘Donkey Punch’ – Hatrax

It’s out and charted and charting sure, but the reaction I got and I saw from other jocks using it was huge. Right from the moment the circus sounds of the breakdown came in the dance floor reacted.

(2) Taurus & Vagelli – ‘Croketts Theme’ – Bugeyed Records

Really heavy techy prog that rolls and rolls. Using a cheeky sample from the 80s TV hit, this song has all the right elements for todays dance floor at prime time. The production from this American duo is fantastic.

FunkyHouseMusic.com: The overall biggest tune of the 2008 WMC?

JELO: Not up to me but if i were to call it, Deadmau5 vs. JELO ‘The Reward is Cheese’. We did this last May and it’s still running things. Must’ve heard it three dozen times at the conference.

FunkyHouseMusic.com: Best party of the 2008 WMC?

JELO: "Thank Glaude It’s Miami" @ Dream presented by Crobar. Outta’ nowhere this turned into ground zero. I didn’t think it was going to be THAT full on when so many events were running on the 26^th, but with the venue stocked with DJ Dan, Donald Glaude, Stupid Fresh & Hatiras it was rocking!

FunkyHouseMusic.com: Who rocked it?

JELO: I thought I did ok . both Hatiras & Stupid Fresh showed the dance floor who’s boss.

FunkyHouseMusic.com: What are your plans for the rest of 2008?

JELO: Release stunners to the world to use and fuel their floors with. My music is very dance based – I’m a dancer and I like to move it. I’m going to showcase the kitchen sink of electroinca JELO. prog., techno, minimal, house, and of course that electro speed garage sound I cherish so so much.

Charles Feelgood: The overall biggest tune for conference is always a tough question for me because I don’t get caught up in what the guys who are coming from overseas think-usually what they say is the biggest track is what everyone else agrees with-something I haven’t heard of or play!

FunkyHouseMusic.com: Best party of the 2008 WMC?

Charles Feelgood: I really like Danny Tenaglia at Pawnshop -that was insane!

FunkyHouseMusic.com: What are your plans for the rest of 2008?

Charles Feelgood: I am in the studio bustin but-makin tracks and putting some out on my new label Getro Retro! Just finished an Ashley Simpson remix for Geffen and getting ready for the Fever Reunion party at Paradox in June!

David Garcia:Roger Sanchez @ Mansion completely tore the place apart for 8 hours; James Zabiela @ Beatport scratched his way into stardom; Richard Vission at AM Only kept us going into the early morning; and Bad Boy Bill @ XMIX got the party started!

FunkyHouseMusic.com: What are your plans for the rest of 2008?

David Garcia: Really focus on Solmatic Records and new productions. We just launched the new Solmatic Records website and its a lot more interactive, I Have several new singles coming out, the first one called “WARLOCK” and a few remixes as well, one for Dave Aude’s track “Grass is Greener”. both should be out end of May.

DJ Dan: CLASSIXX – Cold Act Ill (Wolfgang Gartner Monster Mix). This is a personal favorite of mine and we heard it at almost every party we walked into.

DJ Dan: DJ Dan and Donald Glaude “Stick Em”

FunkyHouseMusic.com: Best party of the 2008 WMC?

DJ Dan: I’d have to say the AM Only party at Karu and Y. �Just when you think you’ve seen every part of that venue, it keeps on going. �I think there were 5 different rooms of music with some of the best talent in the world. �Every room was going off. �And I had the pleasure of playing a 2×4 set with my good friend Uberzone in the house room which went very well.

FunkyHouseMusic.com: Who rocked it?

DJ Dan: Well, my schedule was so hectic at the conference that I didn’t have that much time to see all the acts I had wanted to see. �But I did have the pleasure of catching the Swedish House Mafia guys (Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Angello, and Axwell) at Set and they really tore the roof off of that place. I also was able to catch a glimpse of James Zabiela’s set at the Beatport Pool Party and that guy can really put on a great show.

FunkyHouseMusic.com: What are your plans for the rest of 2008?

DJ Dan: I’ve got a very busy 2008 lined up. �I’ve recently launched the 2×4 InStereo Tour with Donald Glaude and myself. �We’re going to be having different InStereo artists opening in different markets to showcase the sound of the label.

I’m also working on my first artist album which I’m hoping to have done this year. �It’s going to be an album of covers. I’m taking some of my favorite tracks of all time and completely re-creating them and putting my own twist on them. �It’s a fun concept and I think people are really going to dig it.

FunkyHouseMusic.com: Your personal favorite tune of the 2008 WMC?
DJ Kue: I have no idea what it was, but I heard Stupid Fresh play some track at the Eden party that reminded me of some schoolyard song. It was nuts! On another note, I will say it was great to hear some of my stuff being played at WMC. Makes me feel appreciated you know!

FunkyHouseMusic.com: The overall biggest tune of the 2008 WMC?

DJ Kue: Hmm, you know, that’s a tough one. What’s interesting about WMC now, is that alot of the music you end up hearing is already released. So there was nothing that really wowed me, but overall, my favorite tune this year has to be Sia “The Girl You Lost To Cocaine (Sander Van Doorn Remix)”. That tune was massive and definitely rocked the house at the different parties I checked out.

FunkyHouseMusic.com: Best party of the 2008 WMC?

DJ Kue: I definitely had a blast at the Eden Party and the AM Only party. It was great meeting alot of people. That was definitely the highlight for me. The music was rocking and people were having a great time. I will say that Ultra didn’t impress me this year and usually, that’s the party that knocks your socks off.

FunkyHouseMusic.com: Who rocked it?

DJ Kue: Stupid Fresh absolutely murdered the Eden party. Hands down. Hatiras had the crowd rocking by the time these two guys came on and damn! Their track selection (which was pretty much all their stuff) was massive. I highly predict Fidget House to be the next big thing in the next couple of months. Electro has become so stale as of late, and these guys, along with the other producers making waves overseas, are going to BLOW UP.

FunkyHouseMusic.com: What are your plans for the rest of 2008?

DJ Kue: To keep making music. Miami always lets me reevaluate current trends in electronic music and I come back rejuvenated and ready to go. So much good music and so influential. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for music in 2008!

RIP: Mel Cheren

Sadly, on December 7th 2007 the dance music community lost a legend — Mel Cheren aka “The Godfather of Disco”. As the founder of West End Records and the visionary behind The Paradise Garage, Mel revolutionized Disco music and the Club scene as a whole.

10: The Monome is a very promosing MIDI interface and could be very innovative for live performances. Hopefully, there will start to be more synergy behind the development efforts rather than everyone for themselves implementations. Something similar to Novation’s Automap technology would do the trick. As for the Tenori-on, its more instrument than MIDI interface.

09: Create Digital Music is an awesome blog. Think: Future Music did.

Resist Music ceases operation, being Liquidated

Along with 3Beat Digital and Amato Distribution, Resist Music (formerly React Music) has ceased operation and is being liquidated. The landscape of Electronic Dance Music distribution is continuing to be a state of flux from the uncertainty of vinyl in the new digital distribution age.

Resist Music was established in 1990 (known then as React Music) and until 2004 was part of the Beechwood Music group before its closure which foisted an estimated $1.9 million of debt onto React. The company reformed as Resist and had never looked back. Its closure is sure to send shockwaves through the dance community.

This is a part of an email from Artist/producer Morgan King who contacted Resist regarding routine royalty payments only to get this response:

Hi Morgan

Very bad news I’m afraid. I was made redundant last Friday which is what it says in the letter I received this morning, apparently at that time Resist went into Liquidation.

The Liquidators are David Rubin & Partners, Pearl Assurance House, 319 Ballards Lane, London N12 8LY.

I know that Music Industry sales have really been suffering at the hands of modern technology so I’m afraid it hasn’t come as a surprise.

Club Azuli and The Cross to close

After 14 years of being a staple in the London house music club scene, The Cross, will close permanently on January 1st 2008 and will be demolished to make way for renovations to Kings Cross.

This also marks the end of Azuli’s “Club Azuli” Saturday nights which have been instrumental in pushing world-class house lineups for many years.
