Serato Meets Pioneer

Serato

Serato and Pioneer have announced details of a new partnership which will link their respective Scratch Live and CDJ products.

Said to function simply through a “plug-and-play connection,” Serato’s new integration with Pioneer’s CDJ-2000 and CDJ-900 models will grant DJs access to their Scratch Live music library via the decks’ standard interface, with the option to flick between software and CDJ mode. Once the CDJs are hooked up with official Rane hardware, features such as crates, album artwork, track overviews and cue/loops point will become accessible via the CDJ’s colour screen and hardware controls.

Martin Solveig & Dragonette – “Hello”

martin-solveig-smash

It’s the same man, the same producer, and he’s got the same quintessential attitude towards life and music as he ever had! We’re speaking about Martin Solveig of course, and he’s back with a brand new single, simply called ‘Hello’.

Of course, there is nothing ‘simple’ about this record, far from it; it’s brilliant, and as with everything the Frenchman does, comes with a jaw dropping video.

Let’s not forget Martin’s last release – the very lush and very pop ‘Boys & Girls’, a track that clocked up over 2 million hits on Youtube and brought to an end the ‘C’est La Vie’ chapter of his award winning career. It’s Martin’s affections for Dragonette that have led him to invite them back for this next record that once again feature Martina Sorbara’s untouchable vocals.

‘Hello’ is a funky, driving number, doused with chunky bass riffs, hypnotic grooving synths, skipping percussion and vocal hooks that will plant themselves in the mind of even the most cynical of critics all summer long.

The video is quite something else… Let us indulge you…

Set amongst the media furore of The Roland Garros French Tennis Open, ‘Hello’ follows the story of a DJ who is in training because it takes “a lot of skill and a lot of energy to become a DJ”. Spurred on by the off-the-wall plots of his manager, French DJ Gregory Darsa, Martin finds himself unwittingly staged on centre court for the match of his life against Bob Sinclar. Sinclar is a seasoned pro, and Martin’s inexperience on the court shows – that is, until the love of his life shows up. But things of course don’t always run so smoothly… all’s fair in love and war, right?

The new single, with its huge crossover appeal and popular structure, is firm evidence of Martin’s musical prowess, unstoppable energy and strong sense of humour as he delivers a shot of cynicism and good-hearted humour into the arm of pop music. This highly improbable match was shot on location in front of 12,000 spectators, the day before the beginning of the competition thanks to the exceptional kindness of the Roland Garros’ management. The extravagant duel was punctuated with unexpected but welcome interventions from real international tennis stars such as Novak Djokovic, Gaël Monfils, Olivia Sanchez, Mathilde Johansson and hosted by Nelson Montfort.

A breakthrough summertime smash, ‘Hello’ deserved a video with flair, passion and originality to rightfully catapult it forward. Welcome back Martin Solveig.

The Secrets of DJing: Lesson 1

brainDJ

New York-based DJ Peter Munch is putting together a series on the art of DJing, which begins by looking at the science behind moving a dance floor and picking yourself up a DJ mentor.

Now and then, random aspiring DJs ask me if I can teach them the secret to my DJing techniques. “I just want to see what you do, look at your technique”, is the typical phrase they use. Every time my response is the same. The technique is the easiest part of DJing – and it would be a waste of our time for me to guide them through something they can read in a manual. Where I could be of help though, is to teach them about intuition, and the psychology behind what I do. I believe these “soft skills” of understanding the room and knowing how and when to apply the right selection are crucial to being a superb DJ. Yet when I explain this they back off, they believe that DJing is about physical techniques or “hard skills” (beatmatching, cutting, efx, etc). I will take this opportunity to explain more about the soft skills of intuition and empathy that bring DJing to another level and how I began to understand their importance.
