Aeroplane – TMS Interview

We got news that a new release is invading the market from one of our favorite house musicians – Chuck Love – and a track entitled “How We Get Down”. After searching for the video, we stumbled across this intriguing piece of footage that includes previewing the new choon, along with other interesting nuggets of visuals and commentary.

As far as cover bands go, Telephoned’s probably not the one your cousin Lupo from Long Island’s gonna call to play his wedding. Taking their concept from the old game of telephone, the duo of Maggie Horn and Sammy Bananas translate popular music through their various personal filters for an off-the-wall end version of the initial song, drawing on influences which seem to include: NYC nightlife, Hot 97, general fun times, 1990s club music, sequins and neon x-rays (see above). Their second mix tape sticks mostly to the top 40 R&B/rap bent of their first, twisting tracks everybody knows through their high-nightlife techno vision (though Chelley’s “Took the Night” and Teki Latex’s “Dinosaurs With Guns” both get the Telephoned treatment). A version of Donnis’ “Gone” is turned into a kind of screwed down, emo-club Dem Bow, while Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” and Jay-Z’s “On to the Next One” are warped into clamoring, post-Swizz pop art, with Bananas blessedly dipping his foot in the long lost genre of drill n bass.

It’s been a hectic few weeks over at Defected HQ. Since it was announced some time ago, it seems that pretty much every meeting, discussion, email and phone call every member of staff has been involved with has revolved around one thing; the Defected In The House Live Weekend. And now that the weekend has swept past us, leaving a trail of sore heads, ringing eardrums and hazy memories in its wake, a single questions stands out from all the rest; was it worth all the fuss? The answer, happily, is the most emphatic ‘yes’ that I could possibly muster the strength to bellow from the rooftops.

Hatiras Presents DJ DLG 02

Italian-born wunderkind and producer to watch Phonat follows up his critically acclaimed debut album with the Cockroaches EP, a 4 track slice of underground electronica. Eschewing the temptation to cash in on his album’s taste maker plaudits with a commercial banger, Phonat remains as original and adept as ever, choosing to paint an introspective and edgy audio picture of his Dalston junction bedsit and club culture environment, perfect for murky nights in and sweaty backroom bass-bins.

Cockroaches, Spliff Dub, Intimate Confessions and The Microwave FX are the titles and perhaps they say it all. Dubstep, glitch and french house are the main influences – but created in a unique and totally original way, presenting his own take on the atmosphere of London’s underbelly.

Watch out for guest vocal snippets on “Spliff Dub” provided by one of London’s hottest grime MCs, Dizzee Rascal’s protegee – ‘Footsie’ from the Newham Generals.
