Greg Nice – Mother*uck@

greg nice

Wow! This is one whacked out post if we have ever made one. Former golden age outfit Nice n’ Smooth co-member Greg Nice seems to be making a return of sorts. But instead of hip-hop, he is taking his playful rhyme-style to the club sound, and the entire NYC cross-over/hybrid scene of artists is showing their support. In addition to the leaked video below, Fools Gold’s own Nick Catchdubs has remixed the track and needless to say it’s a break-beat BANGER! With tinges of B-More, classic breaks, plenty of underground funk and a whole lot of low-end, its a heavy hitting mix that’s sure to get you moving.

Legendary hip-hop artist Greg Nice leaked a new video entitled “Motherfuck@” from his upcoming album, The Popcycle, due out September 28th via One Haven Music/Industry Rule 4080.

The video was created through various drops from DJ’s such as A-Trak, Lil Jon, DJ Premier, DJ Scottie B, Roxy Cottontail, Pete Rock, DJ Big Ben, Thee Mike B, Nick Catchdubs, Todd Terry, Rich Medina and many more. The video introduces a different side of Greg to fans and newcomers alike, with his catchy rhymes and hooks dropping over a heavy club track.

Aeroplane – TMS Interview

Aeroplane

So, about a month ago I had the chance to interview Aeroplane, it was just after the ‘break-up’ of the band and during the entire walk to the interview I spent a lot of time debating with myself whether it would be chill to bring it up. Not only that, but, I was totally late and stuff…

No jokes. After the introduction, I did this….

Telephoned – ‘Keep Their Heads Ringin’ Mixtape

telephoned

As far as cover bands go, Telephoned’s probably not the one your cousin Lupo from Long Island’s gonna call to play his wedding. Taking their concept from the old game of telephone, the duo of Maggie Horn and Sammy Bananas translate popular music through their various personal filters for an off-the-wall end version of the initial song, drawing on influences which seem to include: NYC nightlife, Hot 97, general fun times, 1990s club music, sequins and neon x-rays (see above). Their second mix tape sticks mostly to the top 40 R&B/rap bent of their first, twisting tracks everybody knows through their high-nightlife techno vision (though Chelley’s “Took the Night” and Teki Latex’s “Dinosaurs With Guns” both get the Telephoned treatment). A version of Donnis’ “Gone” is turned into a kind of screwed down, emo-club Dem Bow, while Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” and Jay-Z’s “On to the Next One” are warped into clamoring, post-Swizz pop art, with Bananas blessedly dipping his foot in the long lost genre of drill n bass.

Daft Punk – TRON Soundtrack

daft punk tron

It seems the blog-o-sphere has stumbled across the Daft Punk scored tracks for the upcoming TRON movie. Don’t expect robot voices, pounding house rhythms, or re-visiting anthems of years past. This is an insightful approach to a movie score, and if you listen closely, you will hear the Daft Punk influence in each of the productions. We believe this will be a wicked I MAX audio experience to complement the movie’s eye-candy visuals!

Defected Live Weekend – The Report

defected live weekend

It’s been a hectic few weeks over at Defected HQ. Since it was announced some time ago, it seems that pretty much every meeting, discussion, email and phone call every member of staff has been involved with has revolved around one thing; the Defected In The House Live Weekend. And now that the weekend has swept past us, leaving a trail of sore heads, ringing eardrums and hazy memories in its wake, a single questions stands out from all the rest; was it worth all the fuss? The answer, happily, is the most emphatic ‘yes’ that I could possibly muster the strength to bellow from the rooftops.

Grum – Through The Night

grum

The new release from Grum’s ‘Heartbeats’ record label see’s the young producer taking another adventure down funky house, nu:disco, and pop. There is a heavy 80′s vibe happening throughout the video that has been described to us as a “Jerry Bruckheimer, Top Gun ‘bromance’ with mullets that deserves first prize!”

We must say – we are in full agreement. Another strong showing from Grum that we believe many will enjoy!

Phonat – Cockroaches E.P.

Phonat

Italian-born wunderkind and producer to watch Phonat follows up his critically acclaimed debut album with the Cockroaches EP, a 4 track slice of underground electronica. Eschewing the temptation to cash in on his album’s taste maker plaudits with a commercial banger, Phonat remains as original and adept as ever, choosing to paint an introspective and edgy audio picture of his Dalston junction bedsit and club culture environment, perfect for murky nights in and sweaty backroom bass-bins.

Cockroaches, Spliff Dub, Intimate Confessions and The Microwave FX are the titles and perhaps they say it all. Dubstep, glitch and french house are the main influences – but created in a unique and totally original way, presenting his own take on the atmosphere of London’s underbelly.

Watch out for guest vocal snippets on “Spliff Dub” provided by one of London’s hottest grime MCs, Dizzee Rascal’s protegee – ‘Footsie’ from the Newham Generals.
Phonat is now back in the studio working on new tracks, so expect more surprises from this constantly fresh young artist later in the year on MofoHifi Records.
