Rane Sixty-Eight: A Mixer/Controller for Two Laptops

Rane DJ Mixer

For all you Serato DJs who’ve ever had a nightmare trying to patch in your laptop at a gig when the DJ before you was also using a Serato setup… well Rane has the solution for you! Create Digital Music has the lowdown on the new Rane Sixety-Eight dual-computer DJ mixer:

It had to happen sooner or later: the computer has supplanted the turntable, so why not a mixer intended for two computers?

That’s the idea behind the just-announced Rane SIXTY-EIGHT. It’s intended for use with two computers via two independent USB ports, plus controller support (intended primarily for Serato’s tools, but presumably adaptable to other software) for up to four virtual decks.

Now, as a way to manage four decks, it seems like absurd overkill – hasn’t Traktor done four decks for years? But if this solution is indeed software-agnostic, it could be a boon to advanced computer musicians wanting to use computers, or DJs wanting to mix Ableton Live on one machine and a DJ app on another. Of course, you could simply do that with normal audio outputs, or even digital outputs that aren’t USB – in fact, many of the Apple machines (among others) come with digital outs.

Head on over to CDM for the full article.

Reboot – Enjoy Music (Crazy P Remix)

Defected

After endless spins from Lord Tong and Lady Mac in its Original and Riva Starr Remix format, this record simply refuses to go away. This is mainly due to the A&R dons up there on the 4th Floor of Defected towers commissioning Wild Bitch and Crazy P to go to town on this gem of an accapella. We all love what those crazy (P) cats do but this mix takes their chic broken house sound to a whole new level. So cool you’ll need gloves to download it!

Alex Metric: Gorillaz – Stylo Remix

Gorillaz Stylo

Continuing to dominate the ani-band scene, Gorillaz are set to release their third album Plastic Beach this March through Virgin. They leaked their single “Stylo” (featuring Mos Def and Bobby Womack) on Twitter last week (tweaked?) and are currently preparing for a heavy summer tour. While no one will argue that Gorillaz have an uncanny ability to write a chart topping single, it was not until I heard the Alex Metric remix of “Stylo” that I was absolutely blown away.

Video: A-Trak & Chilly Gonzales

A-Trak

FHMDC is a very big fan of the A-Trak brand, and the diverse creativity he associates himself with. Whether it is his efforts with Armand Van Helden and the Ducksauce project, blowing up blogs in the NuDisco/Indie space with his essential productions, or jamming with Chilly Gonzales impromptu style — although not directly house music related (and more like DJ Shadow-esque), we believe all innovative music entertainment should be shared and appreciated.

“Often times it’s the casual shows, the “oh I’m just doing this on the side for fun” shows that end up being my favorite ones. Maybe it’s because I love to improvise. Or maybe it’s because these are shows I do with my friends, which is fertile ground for creativity. Last year it was my set at the Do Over. This year so far, my favorite performance was this little guest spot I did at Chilly Gonzales’s “Piano Talk Show” at Joe’s Pub in New York last Thursday. It was barely rehearsed, only 15 minutes in length, and we were both coming in from long flights with little to no sleep.”

Exclusive Interview: Dubtribe Sound System

Dubtribe Sound System

Dubtribe Sound System is a San Francisco based electronic musical group who produced and performed live world wide between 1991 and 2005. Dubtribe consisted of singers Sunshine Jones and Moonbeam Jones, but also included many sit in and “on tour” musicians over the years.

Originally born in a rent party, Dubtribe Sound System distinguished themselves as performers by performing live for many hours, rather than replaying their recordings from dat tapes or portable computers, and touring without stopping, often bringing their own sound, lights, and traveling family with them. But unlike their few counterparts in North America, Dubtribe would depart from the warehouse movement and establish themselves in the mid 1990′s as a grass roots tour de force, refusing help, press, or money from any outside interests.

They arrived at a time when the world was in turmoil, the rave was a new idea which empowered people to gather and dance. Few followed the example set by Dubtribe, but many people were inspired to find their own road.

Dubtribe Sound System performed their supposed final live concert at Cielo, in New York City on December 1st 2005. Many friends and family were in attendance, it was the perfect ending to a wonderfully indepenent, situationist, and punk rock road far too few people choose to travel with the passion and love that Sunshine and Moonbeam have. However, they reunited on September 5, 2009 to play at the “Buzz Reunion 101″ event at Ibiza Nightclub in Washington, D.C. and have since announced their comeback…

When we discovered that Dubtribe was back, FunkyHouseMusic.com had to immediately leap to the opportunity to share some dialogue with the duo, and learn more. After witnessing a fantastic live performance at Cielo – NYC in January, we finally got their attention and we hope you enjoy this rare interview with Sunshine & Moonbeam. Read more
