Exclusive Review: John Dahlback – Pyramid

Exclusive Review: John Dahlback - PyramidArtist: John Dahlback
Title: Pyramid
Label: Pickadoll
Format: Digital
Release Date: June 16, 2008
Audio Sample: Listen

Easily one of house music’s most prolific producers in 2008, Sweden’s John Dahlback gives us one of his strongest releases to date with Pyramid, released through his Pickadoll label, and also available through CR2.

As with most house music of late, Pyramid is really tough to classify. The track centers around an expressive (some might say silly) lead melody that is backed up by an entire battalion of synths – multiple pads, arps, and a subtle yet heavy bassline – with the rhythm carried along by simple but effective drums. The complex arrangement is definitely of a progressive nature, and the result is nothing short of a memorable masterpiece…

Unbelievably, the release comes with an equally amazing remix from Australia’s Dirty South. Following his trademark style, the Dirty South remix features an in-your-face piano melody that follows the lead, and heavy tom work in place of bassline. This remix is much simpler than the original, yet that allows the few remaining elements to stand out that much more, resulting in a punchier experience for the dancefloor. In addition, short yet dramatic pads that appear at the end of certain phrases and a punchier filtered synth give the track additional weight.

In short, what we have here is a release featuring some of the best work from two of today’s most respected producers. Don’t miss out.
